Watercolor is a fantastic medium. It is usually one of the first paints that a child ever paints with and discover what they can express through a brush and paper. When an artist uses it, new exciting doors are opened to what a painter is capable of.

#watercolorists is excited whenever someone discovers and explores watercolor, and is continually looking for ways to make those first paintings a fun and successful experience. We've gathered together resources that artists put together to help others discover this medium.

ok - 3 months later and I am still laughing about the title of this news item.
No. ANYbody cannot watercolor. lolol Me for instance.

I've had a chance to read and study all the tutorials listed and the links to the others. I've hunted the watercolorists pages for other tips and tricks.
Help outside dA is the next step.

I am visiting my daughter who has been self-learning about W/C and getting a handle on it. We have been playing together with the paints and she still comes up with some winners while I am a dribbler and blotcher.

I love the look of watecolor so much that I am will to stick with it for awhile.
I need a brush and stroke tut. Show a brush and all the possible things it can do and a hint about how to do them. Then the next brush, same thing with examples. Then the next. Is there something like that somewhere?

Yes, thtat's true, not anyone can watercolour, just like not everyone can draw, or even draw decently. But people who can draw seems to think it's notmal to be able to, while for others, even after 10 years of trying, can't get to make a circle that can pass for an anime face

 Hi! I check out this article from time to time. I'm sorry that you aren't getting the results you want with watercolors.

I have a couple watercolor books that spend a couple pages on the various marks you can make with a brush, or spray bottles, dripping, flicking, etc.

I'm constantly learning with each new piece I do. It takes me a while sometimes to discover the right brushstroke to get the texture I'm looking for.

I know something like this doesn't exist on dA, I would love to tackle it myself, but I have no time in the next months do to so. Have you found anything valuable inthe links in this watercolorist's journal?

Do you have a decent library nearby? Or maybe get a library exchange? The books I have that go over this are The Watercolorists Essential Notebook by MacKenzie and 100 Keys to Great Watercolor Painting by Miranda Fellows. The notebook is valuable, I would suggest buying it. The 100 Keys is just a little tip book. But it goes over a wonderful variety of techinques that I've used and learned. There are other books I'm sure. :-)

I hope this gives you a start. i wonder if this would be a good topic for an aquatip, if you want it as one, let me know and I'll post it.

Let me know if you have anymore questions! :-)

I don't get to play with w/c very often. The only way to learn this medium is to practice, practice. Since your comment I have been to the library several times. The titles you suggested were not available but I found one in about w/c + pen and ink textures that I thought was helpful. I went ahead and ordered the other two and had them sent to my daughter, who will use them more than I and then will teach me. (good investment, lol) I will see her (and the books) this summer. She joined watercolorists a while back and studies the gallery then tried differnt things. I think she is coming along quite nicely. She recently finished this [link]

Thanks so much for your help! I really appreciate the time you took to respond. The work you show in your gallery certainly gives your opinion credibility.

She is doing great! :-) I am glad you still have the drive to learn more and can have fun with your experiences. That is what hooked me on watercolors too. ;-) Books for me were sometimes helpful and not. But some books I would reread it a year later and all of a sudden it made perfect sense, I just needed a little more experience. Don't let that ruined paper discourage you! I'd be lying if I said it didn't me (I ruined some paper just last week in fact  ) but I still enjoy it pick up the brush again.

 Keep it up!
